The Sundry Folk Festival (est. 2010) is a multi-artist worship house party with creative outlets for encountering God in new ways. The entrance fee is a can of soup for the local food pantry.

In early 2009 Jonathan Price and D. J. Stone began talks to create a house party featuring local Christian musicians. Unlike conventional worship nights, the house party would offer a more intimate setting where the songs would seem less like a show and more like an still, small evening to hear the still, small voice.

At the start of 2010 the list of artists coming together meant that, more than a still, small evening, the house party might seem at times like, a really, really loud prayer closet. Then, the concept blossomed to include other worship arts, such as spoken word poetry, spontaneous art, and (do we dare) dance, and alas, a theme was born. We are a peculiar people, I thought. We are a random, mish-mash bunch of people who have the common yearning for more of God as a perpetual tugging at our hearts. We are a sundry people.

Sundry comes from the Old English word syndrig, which means “separate, apart, and special.” As Christ’s followers, we are called to be separate, set apart from the world–in it, but not of it. And because we are His, we are special, called. The Sundry Folk Festival denotes not only our oddities and eccentricities but also the spark of the Divine which sits inside each of us and sets us apart though we may live otherwise ordinary lives.
